Cultural & historical visits

Besides a bush and beach safari, Zarris offers safaris purely themed on culture and history. Most people in the world only know about slave trade from West Africa and the western strip of southern Africa. Did you know that slave and concubine trade also existed on the eastern coast of Africa? Trade of ivory tusks, tortoise shells, and cargos of gold were traded across the Indian Ocean between the Horn of Africa and India, the Persian Gulf, and the eastern Mediterranean.

The coastal region (Mombasa and Lamu) also offers a rich cultural history of Kenya pre and post-colonial periods. Even with the growth of cities and towns, the northern part of Kenya offers rich and authentic cultural encounters with the pastoralist communities.

Farm visits

A large population in East Africa live and works on farms. Kenya is known to have an abundant and diverse agricultural sector. There are large plantations/farms where cash crops such as coffee, tea, and horticultural products are grown, and livestock such as cattle, sheep, and goats are kept. Zarris organizes farm visits where guests can experience the daily running of the farm and participate in hands-on activities such as picking tea and coffee, milking cows, or harvesting crops. In return, visitors can enjoy the farm’s fresh produce such as fresh fruit and vegetables and even some roasted meat (nyama choma).
